Andi Neate's third album is an eclectic collection of tracks, a curious but appealing mix of lullabies and laments that go from folky and melodic to jazzy and back again, touching on remembrances and themes of fear, loneliness and regret, all the time supported by strong but smooth vocals reminiscent of the great female singer songwriters of the '70s. Recalling the angst of Janis Ian, Neate has written all the songs herself, with the exception of Suzanne Vega's exquisite The Queen and the Soldier which makes for an incongruous but welcome addition. Of her own compositions, highlights include the sweet and wistful Little Blue and a tale of the pains of childhood, the truly beautiful Sandcars.
THE SKINNY
(Paper Animals review)

CRASH

No peace, no silence, Nowhere left to go, People are everywhere rushing to and fro, No time to eat, no time to sleep or care what we breath, And all that I hate in the world has left its mark on me,

CHORUS Till there's a crash and the door slams, Blood on the floor, Waiting for survival, Waiting for something more,

You sleep you eat you dream, you watch TV, There is so much more to this than you want to see, You turn my world upside down, You leave me cold, you leave me sad, And so I shut you out, I close the door, I search myself for some way out,

CHORUS We listen to you cry everyday, about your life, and about poor me, This time you are on your own, theres no-one left to listen to you moan, So get on up, up, off the floor, it's not just you who can't stand it anymore, And you've got so much to give and it's standing right in front of you, It's not called your sex, it's your self respect, So get on up, up off the floor, it's not just you who can't stand it anymore, You've got so much to give and it's standing right in front of you, It's not called your sex, it's your self respect,

CHORUS

PAPER ANIMALS

The world is passing me by, I sell good coffee to the discerning eye, And everybody wants a piece of me, The devils and the demons, and the beggars in the street,

But I'm so bored on a rainy day, I'm making paper animals just to give them away, To random children with red noses and bright eyes, Watched by mothers with drugs in their eyes,

CHORUS I don't want you to even talk to me, I don't want you to even drink my bllod, I forbid you all to take a piece of me when you're leaving, I forbid you to even go there,

And Gary holds his slashed up wrists, He says you're my guardian angel, you're my saving grace, And Phil's wrapped in a blanket, and he's walking in circles, Today he's silent, but tomorrow he's talking, And John he follows me from door to door and from box to box, And he wants to share his food with me, he wants to share his bed, But I can't help, no I can't help him at all,

And Jimmy says you're too naive, You've got to grow up girl, You've got to learn to believe, In yourself, In yourself, Innocence, in a sense,

But I'm so bored on a rainy day, I'm making paper animals just to give them away, To random children, with red noses and bright eyes, Watched by their mothers with drugs in their eyes,

CHORUS

SANDCARS...

We were driving home,
Singing, playing games,
On the back seat,
One of 3, one of 5,
Boys they laugh , they tease,
They shout, they curse, they sleep,
Oh remember the way things used to be,

So dry those eyes, and look straight ahead,
Say how you feel and show what you mean,
I won't regret no, one more minute that I stand here,
I won't regret one more day,

Sand cars in the sand,
Bows and arrows made by hand,
Fields of boys,
With bikes and with guns,
One girl 10 to one,
Prove herself fight all of them,
At the same time,
If that's what it takes,

CHORUS

So take your time, don't get there too soon, too soon,
We grow up too fast, like it or not, take your time, take your time,
Can't turn back the days, take back the nights, take back my life,
So take your time,
Don't get there too soon, too soon, take your time, take your time,

Heard every word you ever said,
It looked like I never did,
Tried everyday to be true,
Waited to fall into place,
No surprise as I fell from grace,
No-one else ever knew,

CHORUS

S.O.S ...

You could be the one that swallowed me whole,
Like a fish on a hook unable to let go,
Finally my priorities have changed,
Pushing me onto the next train,

Till who I am now is so different from what I was before,
Don't mistake, mislead be greedy,
We can only dream for what never comes easy,

CHORUS
Till all our friends have gone,
Have children moving on,
They don't want to sing the same old songs,

Moving swiftly to a different place,
Armed with nothing but a telephone and my face,
Cats in boxes, cards on the table,
My room is set and my heart is able too,

To tell lies and play the game,
Pretend to be what they just cannot see,
Confident, capable, carefree,
Calmly in control of my own destiny,

CHORUS

Passing time rules what I say,
With flashing lights shouting come on this way,
It's not over yet, you've still got to play,
The hand is dealt, now come on lets stay,

Not so many of us left,
Holy grail, never-ending quest,
Whats the point, what's the test,
Who knows, who knows for sure,

Chorus

FEAR OF LIFE ...

Crying softly in her sleep,
Hide inside a dream,
Arms flailing through the air,
And then falling through the trees,
Waking up so suddenly, her will just ebbed away,
Words caught up inside her mouth, unsure whats left to say,

CHORUS
Tried to wash her hands of this, her fear of life her fear of death,
Tried to be the girl next door, not happy or sad just free,

Cannot hide from who you are,
No the road has stopped and the doorways blocked,
There's nothing left but what you see,
Simple fear of getting older,
Growing up and letting go,
Responsibilities take control,

CHORUS
Oh, sell her freedom

Beating heart and pounding drums,
Like a little bird under someone's thumb,
A cornered cat in a crowded room,
Too afraid to speak, too afraid to move,
Borrowed clothes for a borrowed time,
That lend themselves to help her shine,
Brighter than the Northern star,
Brighter than she was by far,

CHORUS
Oh, sell her freedom

LITTLE BLUE ...

Want you to open your eyes,
Watch the world with a simple surprise, you're brand new,
No hiding, disguising or pretending to be,
You're handmade, homespun, exactly what you see,

Dreamed you up oh out of the blue,
Grew inside her long before she knew,
What the world would be,
What the world could be,
What the world would be for you and me,

CHORUS
La doo day da da day
La doo day,

Thought we'd lost you,
Thought they'd swallowed you whole,
It's not over yet, there's still time to grow, older,
Bright eyes out in the rain,
Getting older by the day,

Why is simple so hard to find,
The harder you look the harder you have to try,
To find a reason, written in the sky,
Pull it all apart to find out why,

CHORUS

Gonna help you learn to fly,
Gonna learn how to help you try,
Take the sadness and find out,
Look inside turn it inside out,

CHORUS

FLY ME TO THE MOON...

So fly, fly me to the moon, 8000 miles away from you,
Then back again too soon,
Brave, brave, brave new world, bigger than we ever heard,
No longer out of reach, no longer from the past,
Still finding peace,

So I found my feet, I found my heart,
Reminded me of the start and where I used to be,
No, no, no not quite what it seems,
Silent minefields fast asleep, oh,
Keeping us off the beach,
Soaked in mystery,
Still calling peace,

CHORUS

No snails, no snakes, no mobile phones,
Just 4- wheel drive, on, off the road,
This time you wanted to stay,

No trains, no trees, no traffic lights,
Isolation, sheep, beyond any doubt,
This time you wanted to stay,

This is your life, you're not alone,
So give me insight to take home,
Memories in a pocketful of stones,
This time, this time I won't neglect,
How lucky we are how much we forget,
What we have and what we see,
Standing right in front of me,
Still chasing dreams,

CHORUS

SO SILENT...

This is no place to make a sound,
So sit and be silent, don't move around,
Sleepy shadows golden dawn,
Another day to be born,

Waiting, waiting to pounce,
Dawn chorus brings unwanted romance,
My heart is open wide,
My heart is open wide,

CHORUS
So silent except for the clock,
The pouring rain tries to wake me up,
Wind in the chimney, holes in the roof,
No hiding the difference between me and you,

So angry and scared of the dark,
Watching you sleep has lost it's spark,
Anxiously bored and counting the stars,
Waiting for something, something to start,

Impatient, twitching, wide awake,
Obsessively thinking, hard to break,
My heart is open wide,
My heart is open wide,

CHORUS

So silent except for the storm,
Pushing, and pushing my heart on and on,
I care what you think and I think too much,
I brave the storm,
And now I'm lost, I'm lost, I'm lost.

THE SOLDIER AND THE QUEEN

The soldier came knocking upon the queen's door,
He said I am not fighting for you anymore,
And the queen she had seen his face someplace before,
Slowly she led him inside,

He said I've watched your battles up here on the hill,
And I've wondered who's the woman for whom we all kill,
And I am leaving tomorrow and you can do what you will.
Only first I am asking you why,

Down the long narrow hall he was led,
Into her room with her tapestries red,
And she never once took the crown from her head,
She asked him then to sit down,

He said I see you now you are so very young,
But I've seen more battles lost than I have won,
And I've got this intuition that says it's all for
your fun,
Now please will you tell me why,

The young queen fixed him with an arrogant eye,
She said you won't understand and you may as well not try,
And her face was a child's and she thought she would cry,
She closed herself up like a fan,

She said I have swallowed a secret burning thread,
It cuts me inside and often I've bled,
And he laid his hands on the top of her head,
Bowed her down to the ground,

How hungry are you, how weak you must feel,
As your living here alone and are never revealed,
But I won't march again on your battle field,
And took her to the window to see,

And the sun it was gold and the sky was grey,
And she wanted more than she ever could say,
And he knew how it frightened her and she turned away,
And would not not look at his face again,

He said I want to live as an honest man,
To give all I deserve and to give all I can,
And to love a young women who I don't understand,
Your highness your ways are very strange,

Now the crown it had fallen and she thought she would break,
And she stood there ashamed of the way her heart ached,
And she took him to the doorstep and she asked him to wait,
She would only be a moment inside,

And out in the distance her order was heard,
And the soldier was killed still waiting for her word,
While the queen went on strangling in the solitude she preferred,

The battle continued on............

THIS TOWN...

This Town, this town,
Is filled with stars,
Being loud, being brash,
Simply who they are,

This town, this town,
Is filled to capacity,
With plays and players, songs and singers,
Saying watch me, watch me, watch me, watch me,

This town, this town,
Has confused me long enough,
Won't let it make me break me, feel this way,
Let the silence mean to much,

This town, this town,
Has qualified me for the prize,
The prize of knowing picture postcards lie,
Scattered in the dust,

Escaping from my heart,
Escaping from my, from my, from my, from my heart,

This town, this town,
Has taken me far too long,
To recognise the truth and were it belongs,

This town, this town,
Has watched me follow the crowd,
With simple twists and turns of fate I fell,
Onto the ground,

Escaping from my heart,
Escaping from my, from my, from my, from my heart,

Escaping from my heart,
Escaping from my, from my, from my, from my, from my heart.

SLAVE ...

Look up your spark is out,
Drowned by the thirst you quenched at last,
Eyes brighter than before,
Before you tried to even the score,

Did someone say dreams are brave,
There's nothing brave about being a slave,
There's nothing brave about being a slave,

Slave to your aching heart,
Slave to your body parts,
Slave to what people think,
Think what you like, what is what is, what is what is,

Slave to the miracle, the cheap trick ,the quick fix,
Slave to the easy ride, so trouble free and on your side,
Slave for bigger things, hoping that luck will bring,
S lave for dignity, no lies, publicity,

Slave to the food we eat, lifestyle and recipe,
slave to the friends we keep, not needed, necessity,

Did someone say dreaming's brave,
There's nothing brave about being a slave,
There's nothing brave about being a slave,

Slave to the miracle, the cheap trick ,the quick fix,
Slave to the easy ride, so trouble free and on your side,
Slave for bigger things, hoping that luck will bring,
Slave for dignity, no lies, publicity,
Slave for dignity, no lies, publicity.
